Bob- I am REALLY sorry to read this. I was hoping to drive to Denver next weekend. It would be a 130 mile round trip. So, short of being left by the side of the road, what should I look for? How will I know when it's time to just drive back and forth to work and nothing more? That's only a 2 mile round trip. Thanks- Chuck Anderson

Dan-

That's interesting, you're in Cheyenne, WY and I'm in Fort Collins, CO. Maybe it's the altitude. The past couple of years, it's been the same story. In the winter months, anti-freeze would drip from the driver's side head. When the weather warmed up, the leak would stop. Overall, I generally wouldn't have to add much anti-freeze to the overflow tank. Unfortunately, this year things are a little different. Although the outward signs of the leak have stopped, I now have to add anti-freeze to the tank every week. I can only assume that if the leak isn't external, it's internal. So, the question is this. How long can it go on this way before something really serious happens? Will it just run worse over time or is there some sort of sudden catastrophe on the horizon? Should I stay pretty close to home?

Chuck, Madeline, and others,

It must be a virus going around, my 90 GL started leaking the blue VW antifreeze from the right side sometime Friday. Inspection confirmed one drip per second, seeping from the gasket near the Allen key drain plug. I'm really upset, because this engine is an option 2 from below, and has less than 40K on it, and I've done EVERYTHING to prevent an early death. Before I execute option 4, does anyone in the Denver area want to come strip the good stuff? Among the goodies are

1. Nokian Hakkapelleti Q's with less than 3,000 miles

2. Bilstien Shocks all around, less than a year old

3. New muffler, cat and headers. Also less than a year.

4. Alloy wheels, with dustcaps

5. In general, a really sweet van, with excellent interior.

I can mail photos of anything you are interested in. I'll entertain offers on the parts or the whole van. If someone is wanting to get in to this crazy cult, here's a nice GL that just needs a new engine.

Well.... Its time to do something with our trusty engine since the right side is crying tears of antifreeze. The way I see it I have 4 choices: 1. pay $2K to have a head job done 2. pay $4K to buy a factory rebuild and pay to have it installed 3. pay $6-10K to switch to another type of engine 4. loose $7K by driving it off a cliff

All things considered (including , and crossing my fingers, I'm about to have Doug's Bugs in Mesa implement choice #1. I think it should last quite some time this way since the bottom end of the engine seems just fine. Last minute thoughts?? Madeline
