Subject: sliding door bearing assembly repair
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

Hello-

Last night while opening the sliding door on a 87 Westy, the door suddenly fell out of the upper track. I was able to catch it and get it more or less back in place and then examine it. While inside the van, the problem is that the roller/bearing in the upper left corner of the door had fallen out. The bolt which goes into this part is nowhere to be found. As the bearing assembly has no segment of bolt inside, it must have come totally unscrewed somehow and fallen out. I am assuming it fell out of the van when the door popped out, alhtough I saw nothing on the ground. Looking at the bentley manual, it seems I just need to replace the bolt and washer.

I am just curious if that has happened to anyone else (it seems a very unlikely failure, and the door has always operated perfectly), and if there are any other warnings or issues I should look at while putting it back in place. It looks straightforward enough, the assembly is more or less T-shaped, and can be tilted back into the groove, and then the bolt runs up through the bracket on the door and into the bottom of the T. I'd prefer the door not to fall off as I am driving around so if I am overlooking something obvious please let me know.

Thanks

rob campbell 87 westy, los angeles
