Subject: Westy innards out and a no-rust rust question
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

Well, it’s taken me a couple of weeks to get to it, but today between applications of primer and paint on the new closet pieces I removed the rest of the interior cabinets in preparation for my soundproofing. The bare interior is very spacious! The B-Quiet is on order and I’m getting down to painted metal below the windows. I just finished removing the fiberglass insulation from the cabinet wall and I see NO rust anywhere. What a relief after all I’ve read about these vehicles.

I was anticipating having to use POR-15 to help control some rust but having found none and wanting to keep the van rust-free, what is the best product to use as a rust preventative? I’d prefer something I can apply myself rather than having to take it to someone, but will welcome all recommendations. I recall reading someone on the list recommend Rust Check, but have not found that.

In addition, I’ll be caulking around the utility inlets, then install the B-Quiet, then a layer of the foil-covered bubble wrap before putting everything back in place. There will be some other mods along the way, such as 12V outlets in a few spots, an inverter and possibly a T-fitting in the propane line to permit a hose connection to the Mr. Buddy heater instead of always having to use propane canisters.

Hope to get it all back together soon, so as not to miss too many nice camping weekends before the hot weather hits.

Stephen
