Oeverhauling a syncro transmission is not all that difficult, for the experienced. There are a number of things that must be inspected including soem of the castings. In addition to normal wear parts such as bearings, gears, and synronizers, the low and main gear carrier housings often need machining or replacement and the Ring/Pinion needs to be properly set. There are also a few tricks to keep them from leaking. You should find a syncro tranny guy like myself or Daryl to take care of it. It may be possible that VW has some available if yours is a basket case. They will take back anything for a core as long as it was from an internal failure. It is rare for them to have any available.
