Oh well now -- the way I heard it, Johnson rods are a part on a steam
locomotive which control how much power goes into the pistons and which
direction the loco moves.

When the patent expired, VW -- along with a host of other automobile
manufacturers -- lifted the design and now the venerable "J-Rod" (as it
is known these days) is commonly found as part of the muffler bearing
assembly.

Yeah. That's it.
