A good friend of mine has a house on the beach about 15 miles east of San
Jose del Cabo in Baja.  He lives there about 6 months out of the year, does
a lot of beach driving and has spent many years experimenting with vehicles
to find to best sand car/street car combination.  He has tried Bugs, Jeeps,
Vanagons (even a syncro) and surprisingly, the best he has found is a 1971
VW Bus.  Nothing fancy, he runs large rounded style Yokohamas on the back at
around 15psi and says it is nearly stuck proof.  One of his favorite
pastimes is to pull up to four wheelers who are stuck and ask if they need
any help.  See... don' need no fancy vehicles, just an old bus.

People seem to wonder at times if Syncros are worth the cost of
ownership. A fair question for sure. It all depends on what you need the
Syncro for.

A week ago today, I was down in Baja with one of my Syncros. A friend
and I drove it down a few days earlier to stay in a campo where I have a
small travel trailer permanently parked. At night I stayed in my trailer
while my friend stayed in the Syncro. It is a mostly stock passenger
model with center seat removed for carrying capacity. He had never slept
in a Vanagon before and was very impressed with the experience compared
to tent camping. Roomy and comfortable, almost luxurious.
