It's really easy to pull the steering wheel and take a look, Maggie. After removing the nut, you should mark the position of the splines so you can put it back in the same position. I'm pretty sure, though, that the ring is worn (or broken) beyond redemption.

I'm enclosing an exploded view (.gif) which the list won't see.
