I bought a new tank and replaced the sending unit assembley at the same time last fall for an unrelated problem. The gas gauge reads exactly the same as before. I have also had three different instrument clusters in my van over the past year and all three fuel gauges read exactly the same - so it's probably some shortcoming in the design of the system.
