Subject: manuel trans pop's drops out of third gear

Greeting all. I have just aquired a 1980 vanagon with manuel trans . It has been sitting for about 3 years and spent a day getting it running and gas tank reseal. The thing is that the shifter seem to just drop out of third gear once and a while. It does have a shifter extention on it . 180,00.0 + miles are on it . Other than this it shifts very smooth in all gears. I checked the archive and only find the 3/4 slider issue. Any ideas?
