The vast majority of 85-91 Vanagons have a tach. For any 86+ that don't, just replace the whole cluster with a 86+ one that does. Move the original speedo to it if you like.

The are some rare 84 tach clusters and many 85. These are different than 86+ and not simple plug and play in 86+ vans for full functionality but they will work fine.

Putting an 86+ cluster into an earlier model has been discussed here many times. More complicated but very doable. I won't repeat the details now.

When swapping clusters always make sure the oil light functions when you are done. That means when the key is turned on the oil light comes on and after the engine is started the oil light goes out.

But one thing has kinda bugged me from the first day I drove it..that clock in the instrument cluster. What is up with a 6" diameter clock, right in your face? Anyhow, mine has lately become erratic, sometimes losing time when the van isn't running, so I have an excuse to perhaps replace it with a Tach, if that is possible. I understand that some vanagons have one in place of that silly clock...(you can get a tiny little stick-on clock for a few bucks at Mall-Wort if you really need another timepiece in your life...) Am I correct in thinking I might be able to swap in a Tach for that clock, without too much trouble? And where might I find one, if anyone has any hints, I'd be grateful.. > > Don Hanson >
