Paul,

I don't believe there is a one catch all year where the tachs were standard. It's probably safe to say a majority of the 86-91 US spec GL models had tachs. The base model non-GL's or L models in 90-91 rarely had tachs and only as an extra cost option. The tachs are not as common in Europe and other markets as I have had several post 89 T3's w/o tachs. Of course, the diesel ones did not normally come with tachs though I have heard some peple claim theirs had one. Even so they are so rare and none at all I have ever heard in the US.

BenT 89 Syncro 16 Doka (no tach -- factory TD) 85 Syncro Doka (tach -- maybe an update add-on?) 88 Canadian 2wd Doka (tach) 85 Vanagon GL (tach) 84 Vanagon GL (tach) 84 Vanagon GL (no tach - before add-on) 87 Vanagon GL (tach)
