I thought Tachs (instead of analog clocks) were standard on all US Vanagons starting in 85 (and 84 Wolfsburgs)

Are you sure your cluster isn't from an older van?

Another hassle with analog clocks is they are noisy! Not in everyday life but if you are an insomniac in a quiet camping place you will hear a loud "tick tick tick" all night...
