Strange. YMMV is very apropos in this case. My '84 Vanagon has been to
Burning Man each of the last 5 years and it doesn't show one bit of rust or
ill effect from the alkali dust.

I took my '90 syncro westy last year for the first time. Anywhere there
was exposed metal got rusty afterward. Especially spots where the paint
was chipped. I'm sure there are places in the van that I can't see where
the oxidation has been accelerated. I'm not happy about it, but I figure
it will hold up long enough for length of time I will own this van.
