In that you'll have to remove the dash to replace the pad which will entail screws and the drilling of pop-rivets then, as they say, assembly is the reverse of removal, why not try to get the whole dash. It'll be easier and quicker in the long run.

Another thing you might consider is adding a deluxe dash console which effectively covers the old pad.

I have one in my '85 which has the same dash pad as your '86 and think it's great.
