She's right, but so what? A little dust never hurt anyone. After a year or
so you might not see any more playa dust in your van, but then it will be
time to go back to Burning Man anyway. You can try convincing her that you
will ward off dust by closing it when you're not there, but it won't work in
the slightest. And from time to time you'll probably want to retreat to
your van during the day anyhow. Besides, there's just a much dust at night
as in the day!
After I left Burning Man I took everything in the van and washed it - all
removable items went either into the washing machine, the sink, or the
bathtub. Then around fifteen minutes of pumping quarters into the car wash,
followed by polishing the whole body with a thin vinegar solution to
counteract the alkaline playa dust.
Six months later I popped the top one day and out flew a cloud of dust.
It's just dust, though, who cares?
A few other suggestions:
- You might connect with the VWBus camp folks, they camp together at
Burning Man. See

- bring bicycles. The playa is pretty big.
- bring a lot of stuff to light yourselves and your bikes at night.
You want other bikers to be able to see you when they are cruising around
the desert at night. It's dark. Flashie-blinkie lights are a very good
thing. You might want a bike lock, too. Sad as it is, bikes do get stolen.
Oh, and be prepared for some major power washing of your bikes afterwards
too.
