Our experience would have been completely different on the Coquihalla Hwy
because our saviour wouldn't have been driving on it! Even if he had been,
the four-lane divided highway would have made us more difficult to see and
impossible for him to drive over, so..............
The Canyon road was in decent shape, blowing snow and all. There were a
couple of work zones that halted us very briefly, one of them in a terrific
spot where I never get enough time to gawk anyway. The bigger work zone was
down right by the Thompson where the road zigs under the CPR tracks, with
the spectacular eroded cliffs on the opposite bank of the river.
I take the Fraser Canyon road at every chance because the Coq doesn't make
things any faster when you're making the long climbs at 25mph and because it
is one of the most beautiful drives in North America. If we're going to or
from the BC Bluegrass Workshop in Sorrento near Salmon Arm, we'll use the
Nicola Valley Road to get us to the Hwy from Merritt to Kamloops. In the
late summer that road smells fantastic, all sagebush and sweet grass, with
herds of horses wandering freely and the sparkling river close at hand.
