Subject: A/C QUESTION ON 90 WESTY
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
I have a 90 Westfalia and I am trying to get the a/c going again. My compressor died and before doing enough research I purchased a Sanden 510 that was advertised as fitting 83-91 models. Once I got it I found that the bracket was basically the same but that the fittings were different. I am having reservations now since the Sanden 510 is a 5 piston compressor vs. the 7 piston Sanden that came in my vehicle. I also have to figure the electrical connections of 1 wire on the 510 vs. 2 wires for the clutch on the wiring harness that's in the vehicle. Then there is the cost of changing the fittings on the hoses over and the other discussion that I have heard with regard to the newer compressor working better with the r134a conversion kit (will be more efficient and last longer on r134a). I have of course also replaced the reciever/drier and will flush the whole system with denatured alchohol before evacuating/charging. The 510 was purchased new in the box at a fairly good price ($200) and . Has anyone else on the list substituted compressors this way? Any opinions as too whether I should procede with this compressor or get the newer model Sanden? Thanks to all.
