As they say, been there and Done that. 1. You should be able to spin the AC compressor pulley with the belt off. If you can't the compressor is locked. 2. AFAIK, there are three different compressor used. 3. FLAPS price for compressor is around $350.00 exchange 4. You will need a new receiver-drier (on my 86 it is at the left rear wheel well). 5. evac & recharge system around $200.00

On the way to a weekend campout, the Westy started smoking thru the left rear engine vents. I pulled over and after making sure I didn't have an engine fire (yes I have new fuel lines), I cracked the lid and discovered that my new A/C Belt with less than 50 miles on it had been torn apart. The belt shroud was loose and heat blistered on the inside, but the belt doesn't look like it was worn, just ripped apart.

The A/C pulleys don't turn, but I don't know if they are suppose to.

Question: Does it sound like a new compressor, or was the belt installed incorrectly.

If a compressor change is in order, should it be OEM or what make do you recommend?

What are ball park $$ for parts and labor?

Thanks,

Larry - Charlotte 89 Westy - Gypsy Rose
