I had a compressor seize up a few years ago and it ripped the belt up
as you described. Smoked for a while, too. You did not mention any
noise. When my compressor fried, the belt made a horrible screeching
sound before it self destructed. Like Ramon mentioned, you should be
able to spin the compressor with the belt off (not just the pulley, the
compressor clutch is not engaged unless the AC is on).
