I have an '88 and installed 5.25" or 6" round speakers in place of the stock ones. I had to remove the shelf and cut it to install the new speakers.

Depending on what year you have and how the speakers are mounted, you may or may not have to remove the shelf. There is space on either side of the condenser - if you remove the rear panel you can look to the front of the van and see your space options. (or if you can, remove the existing speakers. to check your clearances.)
