Why not just slide the seat off, and then turn the base around. No tools.

Ellen, On my '87 syncro Westy I've gotten used to just taking the steering wheel off (takes me 3 minutes, literally), turning the drivers seat around (180) and sliding it forward (front of van) and voila, the aux bat box is thoroughly exposed for easy access. Don't know about the earlier-than-'86's.
