I agree that you should add a fuse, but it doesn't need to be very big if it's just for a turn-on signal. An 8 A (white) pointy VW fuse, a 5 A blade fuse, or a 1 A round glass fuse is probably plenty. The turn-on signal is probably much less than an amp.

The turn-on signal is probably small enough that it won't cause a problem with the existing fuse.
