Find an empty parking lot, turn the steering wheel to the stops, then drive in a circle. Do it both ways. If it's a CV it should make the noise. There will be no doubt/

Also, If a CV was removed for repair (how do you repair a CV?? that is suspicious) then loose CV bolts are suspect. Check them for proper torque. Loose CV bolts, even though not backed out, will allow the CV to "work" and will also make a popping/knocking noise. BTDT.
