I am a proud "daily driver" of an '85, in the state of Michigan. For the past 12 years, my van has been running in the "fender solvent" winter weather here. I like my van, and mourn the ravages of use and weather/location, but I consider the use of the van to be more important than preserving it for indefinite future use. I keep it clean, and rinse it off after the worst of the storms, but I won't stop driving it. It is a tool, designed to be used. It is not a museum piece. IMNSHO, YMMV, TEHO, yadda, yadda, yadda...

y'all can get away with daily driving your vanagons out on the west coast.
if you daily drive your vanagon in the northeast, it becomes a parts car in
about 5 years.. i have a number of parts vanagons here that are full of rust
holes.. you west coasters are scared of seam rust.. seam rust is nothing...
every vanagon has seam rust.. im talking rust HOLES..
i parted out a '91 carat a little while back that had HOLES in the
rockers...holes in the dogleg steps, holes where the front seatbelts mount to the
doglegs, and major rot under the rear hatch seal.. power steering lines weeping
right thru because the metal was so thin..undercarriage a mess. it was a daily
driver from vermont, and then upstate new york. the fiberglass sideskirts did
a great job hiding huge holes in the rockers.. the brackets that held the rear
bumper endcaps on were gone.. completely rusted away..
this is why i dont drive my own vans in the winter..
ive put too much time and money into them for them to turn into another parts
car..
if i lived on the west coast, id drive them daily all year round.
but no way in hell would i do that here..
