When it comes to automatics, the Vanagon unit is about the simplest out there. Any competent transmission shop should be able to handle this for you. Unless you have a major hard part failure or need differential repair, the cost should be fairly reasonable even with a tranny shop doing the R+R. The good book gives ~11 hours to R+R and overhaul. The master overhaul kit should be ~$300 with new pistons, band, steel plates and clutch packs. You do want to rebuild the torque converter. Yours may have to be sent out. 2 reasons, the one way clutch does go bad and all that worn clutch lining and metal is centrifugally impacted in there ready to flake out and fill your rebuilt tranny.

Hi,

My '90 vanagon GL camper needs to have it's automatic transmission reworked/rebuilt. Does anyone on the list know of a good shop in the northeast (around NYC)? I've heard of this place out west but I'm guessing that the shipping cost would be pretty expensive.

Thanks!

Geneviève
