I bought the metal plates to reinforce my ducts, but was unpleasantly
surprised when I pulled the ducts down... and found the plates had already
been used! The ducting was actually tearing away from the plates.

So I gave up. I pulled down the entire center tunnel. I took the tapered
duct piece above the driver and passenger's head and stuck it into the rear
output hole. Now the air blows across the ceiling and "bounces" off the
windshield, gently bathing us in cooled air, rather than squirting it in our
eyes like before. I actually like it much better. This also allowed me to
pull the vent louvers from the front duct piece and turn it into a handy
place to store garage remotes, maps, etc. It definitely doesn't look stock,
but I'm content to have my Vanagon be worth under $6,000...
