No fig newton of your imagination. There is a US1 in Florida that runs parallel to the Atlantic coast just a bit inland (A1A is THE coast highway in Florida). Mostly US1 is also called Dixie Highway, but here in northeast Florida it is called Phillips Highway. There is also a coastal section of US1 in Delaware, and there must be other sections as well. You're corrrect about US17 as the (mostly) coastal highway in the Carolinas.

My unexplained power loss falls into the category of "what the heck was
that?". A few months ago I was cruising up California's Hwy 1* when
Mellow Yellow's engine just stopped. A few seconds later it started
again. I have no idea what happened. Ever since, I have been
figuratively looking over my shoulder, waiting for it to happen, and
wondering what it might turn out to be.
*I have the impression that there is a Hwy 1 along the US east coast,
too. I rode a bicycle from Charleston SC to Norfolk VA with a former
Duke University dean. We stuck to the backroads wherever possible, got
on Hwy 17 when we needed to, but I never saw a Hwy 1. Is the east coast
Hwy 1 a fig newton of my imagination?
