Hi Jeff,

That sounds a lot like the issue I had with the fuel pressure regulator on Dad's 85 sunroof vanagon. Pumping the gas actually opens the throttle body and lets in more air during startup, which corrects for the over-rich condition created by the faulty regulator.

That's my $.02.
