My understanding is that the metal ring prevents the hose from expanding
and therefore it cannot slip off.  I read that somewhere.  I reused them
on mine and all seems well 4 years latter.

Your repair shows a hose clamp *and* the ring installed on the injector.


What gives? Is the metal ring doing anything?
