The tiico engine (at least the original low HP version) produces most of its HP at higher rpms. That works well with the stock gearing of the transmission. Switching to a taller 4th gear, you might find yourself having trouble maintaining speed on grades.

However, it definitely sounds like you have transmission work in the sooner rather than later time space. I don't think your problem is with the linkage.
