awright. absolutely first thing you do, before you do ANYthing else ... to the bus, buy clothes, anything...

go here www.themilepost.com and order a copy of The Milepost magazine(book?).

it is amazing. astounding. stupendous. and all them other words. :)

for ONLY $34, you get pictures, maps, km-by-km descriptions of what lies on each of a half-dozen routes from the u.s. to alaska, plus side-trip highways to Inuvik, Yellowknife, or wherever, ads by the gas stations, restaurants, hotels/motels, sight-seeing attractions, museums, animals, flowers, rivers, fish, and various oh-look-at-that thingies along the way. maps of the cities along the route, even the smaller ones. they even have the ferry schedules and prices if you would rather drive up and cruise back, or vice versa. dates, times, and places for festivals, celebrations, annual moose-dung fling, berry-picking contests, salmon grilling extravaganza, and other such silly nonsense.

did i mention pictures? makes you sick that you're not there already.

it is WELL worth the money, even if you never go to Alaska (i've been buying the damned things for like ten years, and haven't even made it as far north as the border).

no,really, this is something you really should buy and read, if you are even thinking about going to Alaska. this is THE magazine/book (it's softbound, but it's like over 20mm thick!) for the coffee table or the porcelain reading throne. :) it's not for men only, or women only, or kids only, it's for everybody.

oh, and do take it with you on the trip. ;)

happy traveling! unca joel (... one of these days ...)
