i don't think a reference manual reduces the adventure at all. it gives you more choices ... and adventure is all about choices. if you want choice-less adventure, take a cruise boat. :) and i don't think it removes much mystery ... but knowing that a Chevron station is about 20 miles away sure takes some sweat out of driving below the 1/4 tank mark on the gas gauge. and/or makes it easier to plan a side trip to Chicken or some such. for example, you might think it would be a neat thing to drive up to Inuvik ... without the Milepost, you might think you could make it. until you started reading the signs along the Dumpster Highway. with the Milepost, you at least might think twice before setting out along that road. :)

it's all about how you view someone else's information ... use it or not, it's up to you. but taking the reference along for the ride certainly gives you a choice you wouldn't have without it.
