Well, yeah, okay -- along the lines of this suggestion, I reckon it
would be pretty easy to put a 3-way valve in the line that runs from the
tank to the faucet, and run the 3rd way out a hose into my shower water
reservoir -- or into a nearby cooling system. Some pumps are rated for
continuous use, some not. I have no idea how long this Westy water tank
pump is rated, or how long a fellow would have to run it to fill a 2
gallon bucket. Only way to find out is to try it!

Anyone know the i.d. of the hose that runs from the water tank to the
faucet?

With regards to leaving home with the water tank full, and a bunch of
spare water along, I suppose I'd do that if I lived in the flats. But
from coastal San Diego, pretty much everything out of here is uphill --
sometimes a lot uphill. And we get some pretty darn hot weather. Lugging
an extra 40 to 60lbs up the mountains in hot weather just feels wrong.
Sure, it's only 1% of the total weight, but the backpacker in me doesn't
like it, and I know how close, sometimes, the 1.9l engine is to
developing a major complaint. Last time I drove up Hwy 395 from San
Diego to Mammoth Lakes in summer, our beat up Volvo station wagon (The
Silver Weenie) got pretty hot and decided to develop a radiator leak.
Climbing I-8 up out of San Diego, or up Palomar Mountain in hot weather
starts to lift Mellow Yellow's temp gauge, so I guess I try to trim
weight where I can. Since A. I can get water wherever I go and, B. San
Diego water is nothing to boast about, tastewise, I don't mind checking
out the local stuff. Mountain water is always better.
