Wait -- it wasn't a garden hose washer that I used. I tried that and it just wasn't a good fit. Instead, I cut a piece of insulated wire, maybe 18 gauge stuff, regular PVC insulation, to the right length to form a ring to sit inside the ball and socket joint -- essentially the same idea as the washer, but a better fit. Tightened right down, nice as you like.
