Whaler is a brand name and yes they make thermostats for other WV and Audi engines that are not proper for the water boxer. Is the lower disc flat or almost flat? That may be the 1st indication you have the wrong one. You also want the "F" revision. the upper disc actually has a rubber seal on it so there is no bypassing it when it is closed. The Vanagon cooling system has so much reserve capacity plus heater core loading that getting the engine to heat up in cold weather is a challenge. Dennis
