Subject: Re: Need a New Exhaust System, S&S Any Good?

Mufflers of stainless steel cost about $450.00. Just the muffler.Go to ebaymotors and type in " Vanagon stainless steel". Everything you may want or need is there. www.ebay.com

Other Vanagon owners may want to use POR15 to coat NEW plain steel exhaust parts. POR15 is good to 572 degrees F. POR15 says you can use regular POR15 on the muffler and tailpipe. Not the exhaust parts ahead of the muffler.

POR15 has a product called manifold grey. I like this product.Used it several times.Comes in three different colors. It has lots of sediment on the bottom, so you need to have it well mixed. This product brushes very good.Sprays even better. Regular POR15 products claim that brush marks are not a problem. This may be true(brush marks), but the finish from brushing is uneven, and poor if used on large items( my opinion of course). That may be worse than brush marks. This manifold grey finish is very soft and a fingernail will scratch it. The coating needs to be heat treated by engine heat. Then it wont scratch.I put on three coats. Two by brush and the top coat by spray. The top coat was a bit nicer, but brushing is fine. Only use new parts when painting with manifold grey.I think regular POR15 will work with old exhaust parts.Never tried it.
