I've seen auto painters with 20+ years experience try and match metallic paint...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, especially in California where the sun fades everything.

I've also had them say before starting a job "we'll do our best to match the color, but it's a XX year old vehicle...there has been fading etc so we cannot guarantee an exact match"....they probably have this written in the fine print of the service orders too...

For the amount of bodywork you did at that price, the customer should be happy no matter what color the paintjob is, as long as the paintjob looks good and all the outside matches.

They need to remember, NO ONE ELSE would have even accepted the job at that price or done such excellent work. If so, they would have gone elsewhere.

----

And lastly, raise your darn prices on bodywork!!, find the average rate for bodywork in your area and charge $10 MORE an hour than everyone else.

I'm sure NOBODY in the area (perhaps the N.A. continent) will fix a Vanagon body with the level of passion and detail you do. If the customer doesn't want to pay your rate, they can go down the street and get crappy work done. Customers that appreciate quality will gladly pay your rate. As a business owner, sometimes you have to "fire the customer", you cannot make everyone happy all the time. Pick the customers that appreciate your talent.
