Does anyone know which of the threaded ATF cooler attachment holes in the transmission is inlet and which is the outlet? My transmission was contaminated by coolant, so my idea is to run the engine at idle and let the transmission expel the contaminated fluid while it sucks up new fluid. I'm open to suggestions of a better way to get the contaminated fluid out. -------------- Alan, Unconfirmed report says: the lower hole is the out-put, upper hole input back to the AT. Please let us know what you find-out and can confirm.

Your plan for flushing is standard procedure for flushing lines and AT Rad-Coolers in conventional vehicles. Ought to work in a Vanagon but with the following issue or limitation. From what limited information I know about the 090-AT, the ATF circulation to and from the TQ is not significant. The TQ is pressurized with ATF through the small hole in the center of the Turbine-Shaft from the pump. Return ATF is by... I donno! Someone in the know please chime in here?

Without further information, one sure way to flush the TQ is to remove it and flush it out on the bench. This requires removing the whole AT & Diff though. A well equipped Transmission Shop will have a vacuum set-up that will suck all the ATF out of the transmission and TQ, while still mounted in the vehicle.

I would consult with a transmission technician. The damage to the internal seals/clutch-packs may have already been done. At this point, no harm in your flushing idea though, short of your time and many quarts of ATF. Run a bottle of SeaFoam AT Cleaner through it, refill and drive it..... see what happens......
