I just purchased a well-running but PO lots-of-deferred maintainance '83 Westfalia.

I used "100 Mile an Hour" duct tape to securely mount the speedo/odo to the cluster. The tape's adhesive, which can be removed with a light solvent, shouldn't damage the plastic any further. I'll think about fabricating a new attachment system onto the fragile 25 y/o plastic of the cluster.

My speedo/odo was not working and detached from the cluster. All of the speedo/odo mounts were broken. I bought a one-pice cable from Wolfsberg in Seattle. Was able to run the cable with minimal hassle; it connects to and spins the speedo/odo just fine when I spin the cable using my drill.

My problem is: How do I safely remove the jammed stub of the lower speedometer cable out of the steering knuckle? The stub of the cable core and seal are well and truly stuck. The tip of the cable core is all withdrawn far into the hub and won't push out. I removed the circlip and dustcap, and the stub is not hung up anywhere visible from the outboard side. I have a replacement rubber knuckle seal.

Thanks for all your expertise - without this list I'd never have considered a Vanagon to replace my volvo.

I have an 89 Westy, which has the one-piece speedometer cable. Originally, the speedometer needle jumped quite a bit, and then it would stabilized at around 50 or so. I decided to go ahead and replace the speedometer cable based on what I read in the archives. When I hooked up the new one, things were pretty smooth up to about 55, and then there is a lot of noise, and the needle fluctuates (bounces) about 3 mph above and below the real/true reading. At about 65 its a little ....
