Well so far it seems that the trailer light suggestion is winning. There is no VW PN. And indeed it is spliced into original harness. There is no trailer hitch, but at one point engine was "rebuilt" (repaired. cracked head and/or block damage) so maybe too much weight towed at one time. FWIW the main reason marker lights didn't work (after i installed "new" sockets. One was missing!) was that all 3 (!) test bulbs were burned out. After cleaning sockets, and shunting in new wire, I finally found my new spares..... it works I will remove the part. I hope no one elses buses/vans/vanagons/dokas/westies/rivieras/w.h.y. stop running as a result! Thanks! Neil.
