My uncle's looking for a turn-key rebuilt 2.1 for his '89 Westy. His mechanic has quoted him $3500 CDN exchange (+labour) for one, which he thought was a VW reman. Are they still doing these at VW? I thought $3500 CDN sounded pretty fair if it really a VW rebuild. Any thoughts or other options in Canada? He drives it a lot (van has nearly 600k kms), so wants something that will last. I had good luck with my VW reman 2.1L, which ran strong for 14 years and 220k kms (and no leaks!).

Shawn, I have one of these engines sitting in my garage. There should still be more in the VW system. I have written extensively about this engine in the past so if you go search the archives since January you will find what I had to say.
