David:

Moab from DIA is about 350 miles. I think you'd end up spending all your time driving. I'd suggest exploring the mtns west of Denver and Fort Collins.

Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park is supposed to open May 25th or 26th. For a while, the cuts through big snow drifts near the top are amazingly deep. A treat to drive early in the season. http://www.nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/trail_ridge_road_const.htm

Another idea is to drive the Poudre River Canyon W of Fort Collins, over Cameron Pass. Down at the W base is the "moose visitor center" where moose come to visit.... The chances of seeing a moose around there are pretty high.

The Peak-to-Peak Highway from Nederland (head of Boulder Canyon) to Estes Park is a beautiful drive. It is still snowing in the high country, so the peaks should be white.

If you DO head to Moab, and it is daylight when you get to Utah, don't fail to turn S from I-70 at Cisco and go down the river road along the Colorado into Moab.
