I like that idea.

I too had some trouble getting pilot bearing out.

I ended up half destroying and half removing it "properly" with a small slide hammer. IIRC, I made slide hammer by grinding the pointed end of a long spike flat, drilled a hole in this end, threaded a small bolt with washer in that, put vice grips on head end of spike, and slid some kind of weight along spike.
