Bob, I installed these pipes on an 85 1.9 with the tank down but both pipes and the heater hose go through the oval opening where the old pipes were.

If i recall correctly, the arrows should point toward the front of the vehicle. They should follow each others shape when they are aligned. You can use tie wraps to hold their position as you install. I have a picture that may or not help:
