If it's already rattling the honeycomb is already broken so the cat isn't really doing its job. The worst case is that the broken pieces continue to break into pieces small enough to clog the cat and/or muffler causing big problems.

As a quick fix ... until you can replace the cat with a good one ... you can remove it and poke all the honeycomb out of it so that its essentially a straight pipe (hollow) and put it back on. At least this way you avoid the possibility of clogging.
