Since your are using sealants, you can not re-tourque using a torque wrench.
Since the sealant is eliminating any chance of the studs coming loose due to
vibration, ( which is nt an issue here), the only future looseness issue is
stud stretching or in reality, failure. VW did increase the torque to 41
ft/lbs di increase the spec to 41 ft/lbs, but the use of the Lok-tite
reduces the final torque for a given clamping load. Yes the 37 is a 10%
reduction. Experimenting has shown that 41 ft/lbs results in lot of over
stretched and broken studs, especially when they are reused. There is
nothing worse than having a lower stud snap while you are on the road. The
smoke, the loss of power, and oh my gosh, all the coolant suddenly going
into the crankcase.
I have said in the past that any internal gasket leak is usually the result
of loose studs. Any engine that experiences this condition is a candidate to
have all the studs replaced. The outer gasket is not torque dependant as the
head does not clamp down on it tightly. The condition of the rubber and the
mating surfaces are the failure items here.
