Bob Hoover's own words found on the site you pointed to:

Indeed, it's hard to find a material that hasn't been pressed into service as a gasket or seal. I once patched the hull of a dory with pieces of cotton fabric and varnish. The cotton fabric came from a ladies skirt. (Okay, it wasn't exactly a gasket but definitely a seal.)

It wasn't an intention to outsmart anyone, while Dennis used no gasket, I used one cut from a piece of newspaper paper coated with something (name long forgotten) I got from Kragen. My oil pump on the 84' vanagon hasn't leaked since I re-sealed it 40+K miles ago. It was intended as a remedy but since it worked so well I am not in any rush to replace it with one made of correct material.

Honestly my 84' vanagon leaked oil since the first month of 1984. The bottom of the wasserbox near the oil drain plug had been always oilly. But two decades later it is dry now. That OEM gasket made of correct material apparently did not serve me better than a piece of newspaper paper somehow. Please don't take my words here. You got to have a big heart wide open to try it.

I know, I know, some of you will come out to say it is supposed to be oilly there. I should delay no further and replace it with a correct one, which I am waiting for someone to tell me what material it should be made of.
