I got mine out of my backing plates with lots of PB Blaster penetrating spray. I would soak it and reapply a bunch, till i finally got a piece of pipe just big enough to fit over the piece of parking brake cable (on the outside side of the backing plate) and catch the lip of the cable....add in some heavy hammering and you've got yourself a recepie for success. The key is not to destroy your most likely rusty backing plate.

I found parking brake cables to be far more of an adventure than i expected. But then again....its a vanagon....everythings an adventure!
