FWIW, I paid $6k for my '87 Mercedes turbodiesel wagon (300TD), four years ago. You can acquire plenty of the very reliable 124 chassis Mercedes gas wagons (300TE/E320) for < $5k. I like the older Volvos, but anything past the 740/940 series, leaves me cold. Also, we just recently picked up our Audi 100 Q wagon for a little more than $5k--it's a very very nice car, but still not a Mercedes.
