The roof of the pax van must have a decent weight bearing capacity....you can see the tent platforms mounted on the "safari" vanagons that I've seen. I think I saw them on Mike Plompen's website (busman.be).

It's an aluminum ladder that attaches to the rear hatch and a roof rack. I got it off a passenger van, and I have a Westy. The luggage rack is nothing more than a U shaped aluminum bar that atteches to the roof. I've seen this set up on lots of American vans, but never for a Vanagon. I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to put it on my Westy. I figure if I do, I can go to a boating supply store and get some teak strips to put down in the rack area-just not sure what the load capacity would be for the Westy roof, or even what I'd carry up there other than light stuff like folding chairs. I also figure I could come up with some sort of modification for the ladder to hold bikes. The aluminum had turned nearly white, but some Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish shined it right up. Anyone ever seen one of these mounted on a Westy? Jeff
